FAQs

What is Modern Jive?

Modern Jive is a style of partner dance derived from Swing, Lindy Hop, Salsa, Tango, and other forms of ballroom dance. The benefit of Modern Jive, however, is that it has simplified footwork and works with practically any type of music. After only one lesson, you will be able to dance through full songs and look impressive doing it!

Other common names for Modern Jive are Ceroc, Le Roc, Cosmopolitan Jive, and French Jive. Modern Jive is relatively new to Toronto, but is hugely popular in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

How much does it cost?

Your first two classes with UT Modern Jive Dance Club are free – no strings attached! Afterwards, the drop-in rate is $5 per lesson  or buy six lessons for a discounted price of $20 (your credits are fully transferable, there is no need to use them in back to back weeks).

Do I have to register beforehand?

Yes please – we encourage students to register by sending an email prior to 4:00 pm on the day of class to advise of their attendance.  Please note it is important to register because if we have no registrations we will cancel class for the week.

What should I wear?

We suggest that you wear clothes that are comfortable and easy to move around in. Since it can get a little warm dancing in a hall with lots of other people, you may want to wear layers that you can remove or bring a change of shirt.

As for shoes, we suggest that you aim for comfort over style (even the prettiest 4” stilettos will eventually prove to be less-than-comfortable two hours into a dance lesson). Wearing shoes that do not have much of a grip – such as well-worn running shoes or dress shoes with synthetic soles – will make certain moves easier. Dance shoes can be a bit pricey, but they are well worth the investment if you love to dance. Visit our links page for information on dance shoe stores in Toronto.

Do I need to bring a partner?

Absolutely not! You’re more than welcome to bring someone with you to class, but many of our members actually just bring themselves. We rotate partners every few minutes during the lesson, giving everyone a chance to meet and dance with everyone else. During freestyle, feel free to ask anyone dance, including the instructors.

Is it only open to University of Toronto students?

No – both students and non-students are welcome.

The semester has already started. Can I still join?

Of course! We welcome new members throughout the year. You may want to arrive a few minutes early for your first class, though, so that you don’t have to miss the beginning of the lesson to get signed in.

I have danced Modern Jive before. Should I still come to the lessons?

While we obviously can’t force you to attend, we do encourage that you come for the lessons as well as the freestyle. Lessons are a great way to meet new people and perfect your style. And who knows, you may even learn a new combination of moves or two. Our instructors Stephanie and Richard are also always willing to give some extra pointers and style tips at the end of lessons.
